After nearly ten years without a dedicated rock festival, Riihimäki is finally getting its own heavy music celebration again. The brand-new Riutta Rock will take place on August 1 at the Riutta outdoor area, aiming to create a warm and community-driven event that brings together established metal acts, promising newcomers, and strong local talent.

The festival is organized by a team formed around Stranded Mind, with a strong connection to the growing New Wave Of Finnish Heavy Metal movement.

“Besides Waltari and Neverfade, every artist on the lineup has at least one member from Riihimäki, as far as I know,” says Juho Hirvinen, chairman of Stranded Mind Productions. “Half of the lineup — Crow’s Flight, Neverfade and Stranded Mind — are also part of the NWOFHM alliance. The mission is simple: to support rising Finnish heavy metal bands, strengthen collaboration, and build a stronger scene around traditional heavy metal through themed events and live shows.”

The sense of community surrounding the festival extends beyond the stage. The same spirit can also be found in the Marginaalimerkintöjä podcast, collaborations between bands, and the sharing of knowledge within Finland’s underground metal circles.

Interestingly, the roots of the festival go back to the pandemic years, when musicians began organizing backyard gigs during lockdowns simply because the urge to perform had nowhere else to go.

“Since then, the idea of creating something bigger has been growing,” says promoter Lassi Siitonen. “Riihimäki has been without a proper rock festival for around ten years now, so I made it my goal to bring rock back to the city. Everything at this scale is still new and exciting, but you learn by doing — and I genuinely want to keep doing this in the future.”

The organizers also emphasize that they want the festival to stand apart from mainstream events by giving space to smaller and upcoming acts every year.

Despite the excitement, both organizers openly admit that launching a new festival in today’s crowded media landscape comes with uncertainty.

“We’re definitely stepping into unknown territory,” Hirvinen says. “But one thing is certain: we want to create the kind of festival we would personally love to attend ourselves.”
