After a successful debut last year, Formosa : Finland : Fest. returns to Helsinki’s Narinkkatori on July 11, promising another vibrant celebration of Taiwanese and Finnish culture. While the festival’s lineup of rock artists has already generated excitement, visitors can also look forward to an authentic Taiwanese marketplace filled with traditional food, cultural experiences, crafts, and interactive activities.
Organized by the National Cultural Association of Taiwan (NCAT) as part of the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Taiwan Culture in Europe 2026 initiative, the free cultural exchange festival continues its mission of introducing Taiwan’s creativity, traditions, and everyday life to European audiences. Over the years, NCAT has organized similar cultural events across Japan, India, the United States, and Hungary, building bridges through art, music, and community.
Beyond the live performances, Narinkkatori will transform into a lively marketplace where visitors can experience Taiwanese culture firsthand. Guests will have the opportunity to sample authentic street food, browse handcrafted products, and even try traditional Taiwanese night market games, including the classic Shibazai dice game.
One of the highlights of the event is 886 Night Market, a Helsinki-based Taiwanese pop-up concept inspired by Taiwan’s famous night markets. Named after Taiwan’s international dialing code, the concept combines nostalgia with modern creativity while introducing visitors to iconic Taiwanese flavours. Festivalgoers can enjoy specialties such as brown sugar bubble milk tea, freshly baked wheel cakes, and a selection of premium Taiwanese tea products. Beyond food, 886 Night Market also serves as a cultural platform, participating in community projects and cultural exchange events throughout Finland.
“886 symbolizes a direct connection to Taiwanese culture and identity,” the team explains. “Through food, design, and shared experiences, we want to introduce the spirit of Taiwan to a wider international audience. Our pop-up events offer carefully selected Taiwanese-inspired street food, snacks, desserts, and drinks, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant atmosphere of a Taiwanese night market here in Finland.”
Sustainability also plays an important role in the festival. Helsinki-based JooSoap will showcase its innovative approach to environmental responsibility by demonstrating how used cooking oil can be transformed into eco-friendly cleaning soap. Through workshops and community initiatives, the organization promotes circular economy principles while raising awareness about waste reduction and sustainable living.
Another unique addition is Canelé Sugi, a small Helsinki bakery blending traditional French canelés with Japanese-inspired flavours. Visitors will be able to sample creative variations featuring Earl Grey tea, pineapple, and matcha.
The marketplace will also feature Taiwan Coffee, Formosauna Association, Fori Finni and Minä Art Group, Formosa Nights—known for its famous Taiwanese popcorn chicken—Taiwan Mandarin & Culture Finland, and Malaysia Gastronomy, which will introduce visitors to nasi lemak, the beloved Malaysian rice dish that has become a symbol of comfort and community.
Music remains at the heart of Formosa : Finland : Fest. This year’s lineup brings together artists from both Taiwan and Finland, including cyber taike pioneers Amazing Show, Golden Melody Award-winning band Lilium, producer and DJ Dungi Sapor, Finnish hard rock favourites Shiraz Lane, and legendary Finnish rock personality Jussi69, who will close the evening with a special DJ set.
An important figure behind the festival is Taiwan’s representative to Finland and ChthoniC frontman Freddy Lim, who continues to combine diplomacy with music and cultural exchange.
“I’ve been working in Finland for nearly a year now, and it’s been a privilege to witness the wonderful development of relations between our two countries,” Lim says. “Now we’re bringing Finland its very first Taiwanese outdoor market. It may not be huge, but it will certainly be warm, vibrant, and full of atmosphere. Come and enjoy Taiwanese street food, discover our culture, and celebrate together through great music.”
Running from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on July 11, Formosa : Finland : Fest. offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Taiwan’s rich culture, flavours, and music—right in the heart of Helsinki.
