Finnish alternative rock project Grim Sailor have released their new single “Nightwatch,” offering another glimpse into the project’s melodic, melancholic world ahead of its debut album, arriving November 6.
Grim Sailor is primarily the creation of Finnish musician Jouni Hirvonen, who has been developing the project while living in Berlin. Blending an international alternative rock sound with a distinctly Finnish sense of melancholy, Hirvonen has gradually introduced the project through previous singles “You Don’t Belong,” “Feet in Mud” and “Recover Me.”
“Nightwatch” has an unusual origin. While visiting Hirvonen in Berlin, a friend challenged him to write an entire song in a single day. The first idea was inspired by wild boars wandering through the city’s streets at night, with the image of an injured animal moving on a broken leg eventually inspiring the song’s distinctive 7/8 time signature.
As the track developed, however, the animal became something much more human.
“In the end, the animal became a person stalking someone through dark streets, unable to accept that a relationship had ended. The song became a story about control, obsession and the madness that comes from holding onto what once was.”
Mixed by Pekka Kupiainen, “Nightwatch” turns its unconventional rhythm into a surprisingly direct rock anthem, balancing melodic accessibility with a darker psychological undercurrent.
While Grim Sailor remains Hirvonen’s personal vision in the studio, the project expands into a full band on stage with Berlin-based musicians. With Hirvonen preparing to move back to Finland, live shows are also planned in both Germany and Finland, opening another chapter for a project that has quietly begun finding its place in the alternative rock landscape.
