Finnish guitarist Pauli Hauta-aho is celebrating an impressive 30 years in music with three special performances in Lahti and Helsinki this October. Known for his work as the frontman of The Blanko, longtime guitarist of Apulanta, and member of the legendary Leningrad Cowboys, Hauta-aho has built a remarkable career that has taken him across the world.
The anniversary celebrations will begin on October 17 at Pikkuteatteri in Lahti, where Hauta-aho will perform alongside the Lumos String Quartet. The festivities will continue with two rock shows featuring Pauli Oscari Experience, taking place at Torvi in Lahti on October 22 and On The Rocks in Helsinki on October 23.
Each venue holds a special meaning for the guitarist, particularly Torvi, where he took some of his earliest steps as a musician.
“Many musical careers have started at Torvi, including my own. There’s a long history behind the venue, and even blues artists from the United States have performed there. In that spirit, we can expect musical spontaneity, improvisation and a little bit of magic,” Hauta-aho reflects.
Helsinki’s On The Rocks also brings back some unforgettable memories. Hauta-aho recalls being the first musician to sign the venue’s then-empty backstage wall while performing there with his high school band. During that same show, he ended up rolling around on the floor among the audience during a guitar solo.
“We’ll see what happens this time!”
Despite three decades of experience, Hauta-aho still approaches music with the same childlike enthusiasm that first inspired him to pick up the guitar.
“For me, performing music at its best is creative play, guided by the inner child and happening entirely in the moment. Every moment is unique and will never happen exactly the same way again. Nothing beats the liberating feeling of surrendering to the moment.”
His anniversary performances will feature arrangements of his own compositions alongside songs by other artists and musical influences. The Helsinki show will also welcome Ville Tuomi, who previously shared the stage with Hauta-aho in Leningrad Cowboys.
Looking back on a career that has included performances on The Voice of Finland, in Southern European castles and countless venues around the world, Hauta-aho remains fascinated by music’s ability to bring people together.
“People want to step away from their screens and experience things live. I believe that’s something truly valuable, and it’s what I want to share with audiences through my performances. In a way, it’s my life’s mission.”
For Hauta-aho, the anniversary is not simply about looking back. It’s a celebration of the connection between musicians and audiences, and the unpredictable moments that make live music irreplaceable.
“Every concert is a celebration, and every celebration is worth sharing,” he concludes.
