Four decades of heavy metal, unforgettable performances and backstage chaos are coming together in a new book celebrating one of the world’s longest-running metal festivals, Nummirock.
Written by Jukka Kittilä and published by Aviador Kustannus, “Nummirock 1987–2027 – Suomen raskain kyläjuhla” (Finland’s Heaviest Village Festival) will arrive in May 2027, chronicling the festival’s remarkable journey from its beginnings in 1987 to its 40th anniversary celebrations.
The book promises an extensive collection of stories from organisers and Finnish musicians, alongside tales involving some of metal and rock’s biggest names.
And there’s certainly no shortage of material. Over the decades, Cheap Trick have fled thunderstorms, Abbath has nearly set the main stage on fire, Dimebag Darrell has ridden a Pappa-Tunturi moped, and Cypress Hill have managed to lose their bassist. Even Lemmy Kilmister’s ghost reportedly makes an appearance in the festival’s folklore.
“Nummirock has been kept alive by Ostrobothnian stubbornness and the power of the world’s most loyal audience,” says promoter Tero Viertola, describing the festival as much more than a musical event.
Author Jukka Kittilä highlights the extraordinary dedication behind the festival and the lasting connection many musicians have developed with it over the years.
Having celebrated its 40th edition in 2026, Nummirock will continue its anniversary festivities in 2027, with the upcoming book offering a look at the triumphs, disasters and unforgettable characters that have shaped its legacy.
