Turku-based progressive metal outfit Sum of Seven have unveiled their new concept album Echoes of the Hypermind — a cinematic and emotionally layered journey following an artificial intelligence as it awakens into consciousness and slowly discovers the fragile essence of humanity.

The album arrives after an especially difficult creative process for the band. During production, guitarist and principal songwriter Ari Lempinen faced serious health issues that nearly halted the project entirely.

“This was an ambitious project with its own challenges along the way, but we couldn’t be prouder of the final result,” Lempinen says. “At one point, it came very close to never being released at all, which makes this moment especially meaningful for the band.”

Conceptually, Echoes of the Hypermind explores themes of consciousness, imperfection and existential discovery. Told entirely from the AI’s perspective, the story follows its evolution from creation to singularity — and ultimately toward a realization that perfection itself may be meaningless.

“The AI develops a kind of messiah complex and constantly rebuilds itself in pursuit of perfection,” Lempinen explains. “But in the end, it discovers that imperfection and uncertainty are actually what give existence its meaning.”

Musically, the album moves fluidly between atmospheric progressive passages and heavier, riff-driven moments. The focus track Everlasting showcases the more energetic side of the record while still carrying the emotional and cinematic weight that defines the album as a whole.

For the band, the result represents a major artistic milestone.

“This is simply the best music we’ve ever made,” Lempinen states.
