Finnish progressive metal outfit Marsh Tea are entering a new chapter with their emotionally charged single “Reminiscence” and a completely renewed lineup featuring musicians with backgrounds in Children Of Bodom, Red Eleven and Dead Season. In an exclusive conversation with Voice of Noir, founder Nils Ursin reflects on the struggles behind the band’s rebirth, the importance of his new bandmates and what it would mean to finally bring his music to the stage.
Following the release of their debut album, “Disturbances In Movements“, in 2025, Marsh Tea underwent a complete lineup transformation. What could have marked the end of the project instead became an opportunity for founder and creative driving force Nils Ursin to rebuild it alongside Tony Kaikkonen, Mikki Rousi and Jaska Raatikainen.
Their first statement together, “Reminiscence,” introduces a darker, deeply personal atmosphere. Built around a single, subtly shifting rhythm, the song explores grief, memory and the unsettling fear of losing even the smallest details of someone who has passed away.
Ursin explains that the track reflects the emotional darkness that can follow the death of a loved one. Beyond the pain of loss itself lies another frightening possibility: forgetting what that person looked like or how their presence once felt.
The song becomes a meditation on life’s fragility and the importance of appreciating the present, leaving listeners with a haunting question: “What if the darkness remains forever?”
Yet while “Reminiscence” explores loss, the story unfolding behind Marsh Tea is also one of rediscovery.
More than a new lineup
For Ursin, rebuilding Marsh Tea has been about much more than finding musicians capable of performing his compositions. The arrival of his new bandmates has helped restore something he feared he was losing: the determination to keep pursuing his musical ambitions.
Speaking exclusively to Voice of Noir, Ursin makes it clear that the current lineup should not be regarded as merely another incarnation of the project.
“I want everyone to understand that this is not a version of a band. Marsh Tea is a band by four top-tier musicians, Marsh Tea is music and this is Marsh Tea.”
His words underline the importance of the group’s collective identity. Although Marsh Tea began with Ursin’s creative vision, he now sees the four musicians as a band in their own right.
The next major milestone will be bringing this chemistry to a live audience, something Ursin is particularly eager to experience.
“I am very much looking forward to our live shows. I just love playing live and with Marsh Tea we perform my original songs. That is a big deal to say the least.”
Finding the strength to continue
Perhaps the most revealing part of our conversation came when Ursin was asked what success would mean after coming so close to losing Marsh Tea.
His answer offered an unusually personal glimpse into the frustration and determination behind the band’s journey.
“Success for the band would be more than a dream come true. I have banged my head into the brick wall so many times that the wall is nearly collapsing already.”
Behind the humour lies a long struggle to keep the project moving forward. Ursin openly acknowledges that there was a point when his motivation and energy had nearly disappeared.
But the arrival of Kaikkonen, Rousi and Raatikainen changed that.
“I would love to stand in the bright lights with these three guys by my side more than I can explain. They restored my faith to grind even though it seemed that I don’t have the will or energy anymore.”
It is a powerful statement about the importance of finding the right people: not simply as collaborators, but as individuals who can help reignite a creative ambition when it begins to fade.
For Marsh Tea, the release of “Reminiscence” therefore carries meaning beyond its musical direction. While the song confronts the darkness of losing someone, the band’s own story demonstrates how new connections can provide the strength to move forward.
And despite everything that has happened, Ursin’s outlook is now unmistakably hopeful.
“We are on the right path I can say.”
With a renewed lineup, fresh music and the prospect of live performances ahead, Marsh Tea are no longer simply trying to preserve what they once created. They are building something together.
After coming dangerously close to the end, Marsh Tea‘s new chapter is not just about survival, it’s about rediscovering the reason to keep going.
