Finnish industrial metal outfit King Satan have released an unexpected new single—a heavy reimagining of Britney Spears’ 1999 hit “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” Accompanied by a music video, the cover transforms the iconic pop anthem into the band’s signature “death metal disco” style.

Explaining the idea behind the release, frontman King Aleister Satan said:

“There is more than one person in this band who has a deep appreciation for Britney Spears’ early work. For all of us, late ’90s and early 2000s pop music had something special, and (You Drive Me) Crazy is one of the songs that perfectly captures that era. Its energetic yet slightly melancholic atmosphere, infectious rhythms, and great melodies translated surprisingly naturally into King Satan’s industrial metal style.“

Although the band’s upcoming album, Black Magick Abraxas, arrives on November 6, the Britney cover will not appear on the record due to licensing restrictions. Instead, the band describe the single as “a tribute to the eternal return of pop culture” and proof that a great song can transcend genres.

King Satan have also announced the first dates of their upcoming album release tour, including a special performance at Hellsinki Industrial Festival featuring acclaimed blues guitarist Erja Lyytinen, who previously collaborated with the band on the single “Black Magick Rock ‘N’ Roll.”
