Finnish modern metal band Volucrine have released their fifth studio album, “Chapter V: Renewal,” via Inverse Records. Built around personal crisis, change and the difficult process of starting again, the record sees the band pushing beyond traditional genre boundaries to create what vocalist Jupe Velin describes as their most honest work yet.

Founded by Velin almost two decades ago as a form of personal therapy, Volucrine have never been interested in heaviness simply for its own sake. On “Chapter V: Renewal”, metalcore, modern metal, melodic passages and heavier extremes are instead used as tools to express the emotions behind each song.

The album emerged from a particularly difficult period in Velin’s life during 2024. With songwriting becoming a way of finding stability, one question gradually became the foundation of the record: how do you build a new life from nothing?

“Every song on the album represents a different stage of the process, like its own chapter within a larger story,” Velin explains, adding that the band deliberately allowed the songs to develop without forcing them into a specific genre.

At the centre of the album is “Renewal,” a track dealing with repeatedly letting go, beginning again and the pieces of ourselves that can disappear along the way. Musically, it also introduces some of Volucrine’s strongest metalcore influences, combining technical riffs and screamed vocals with a large, cautiously hopeful chorus.

The album’s different sides have already been introduced through “Golem,” “Talk,” “Volucrine” and “Borderline,”but together the 13 tracks form a much broader journey through collapse, uncertainty and reconstruction.

“Chapter V: Renewal” isn’t simply about surviving what came before. It captures the uncomfortable moment after everything has fallen apart—when the page is blank again, and the only choice is whether to disappear or begin writing something new.
